Surviving Moving Day: 5 Tips for Moving with Kids and Pets in Auckland
Let’s be honest: moving house is stressful enough on its own. Add an energetic toddler, a curious cat, or an anxious dog to the mix, and moving day can quickly start to feel like a three-ring circus!
At Super City Removals, we’ve helped countless Auckland families transition to their new homes over the last 15 years. We know first-hand that when you have little ones and furry friends running around, safety and minimizing stress are your top priorities. To help you keep your sanity intact, here are our top 5 tips for surviving moving day with kids and pets in tow.
1. Pack an "Essentials" Survival Bag
When you arrive at your new home, the last thing you want to do is rummage through twenty identical taped boxes to find the dog food or your child's favourite bedtime teddy bear.
Pack an easily accessible overnight bag for your kids and your pets.
For the kids: Include pyjamas, a change of clothes, a favourite toy or tablet (don't forget the charger!), and plenty of familiar snacks.
For the pets: Keep their leash, food bowls, a few days' worth of food, and a familiar-smelling blanket close at hand to help them settle into the new environment.
2. Call in the Reinforcements (Off-Site Care)
The safest place for kids and pets on moving day is usually somewhere else. Movers are carrying heavy, bulky furniture, and exterior doors are often left wide open while the truck is being loaded.
If possible, arrange for younger children to spend the day with grandparents or on a playdate. For pets, consider booking them into an Auckland doggy day-care or a cattery for the day. Keeping them off-site ensures they stay safe and prevents your pets from making a great escape during the chaos!
3. Give Older Kids a "Special Job"
If your kids are old enough to be at the house during the move, keeping them out from underfoot is key. The best way to do this is to make them feel involved.
Give them a specific, safe task in an empty room. Have them decorate their own moving boxes with markers, or put them in charge of packing up their own small, non-breakable toys. It gives them a sense of control over the big change and keeps them safely occupied.
4. Stick to the Routine
Moving entirely disrupts your normal environment, so maintaining your daily routine is crucial for keeping kids and pets calm.
Try to stick to their regular meal times, nap schedules, and evening rituals as closely as possible. When pets and children know what to expect from their day, they are far less likely to act out or become anxious about the transition.
5. Hire the Professionals for the Heavy Lifting
The absolute best way to survive moving day with a family is to free up your own hands. When you are busy assembling boxes, lifting couches, and driving a rental truck across Auckland, you simply don't have the time or energy to comfort a stressed pet or entertain a bored toddler.
By hiring a professional team like Super City Removals, we handle the logistics. From our full packing services to securely loading and unloading the truck, we take the physical labour off your plate. This allows you to focus on what really matters: keeping your family happy, safe, and excited about your new home.
