The Great Outdoors: How to Safely Move Your Auckland Backyard

When you are deep in the trenches of packing up a house, it is incredibly easy to develop tunnel vision. You spend weeks carefully boxing up the kitchen, wrapping the lounge furniture, and clearing out the bedrooms. Then, moving day arrives, you step outside for a breath of fresh air, and it hits you: you completely forgot about the backyard.

The classic Kiwi backyard is often filled with heavy, awkward, and dirty items that do not fit neatly into a standard moving box. From massive terracotta pots and greasy BBQs to the kids' trampoline and heavy outdoor dining tables, moving the exterior of your home requires a specific game plan.

At Super City Removals, we are no strangers to heavy lifting. Here is our expert guide to safely packing and moving your Auckland backyard.

1. Disassemble the Big Items Early

Backyard equipment is notoriously bulky. Items like trampolines, swing sets, and large outdoor dining tables simply cannot be loaded onto a truck fully assembled.

Take the time to dismantle these items a few days before your move. Keep all the springs, bolts, and screws in clearly labeled Ziploc bags, and tape those bags securely to one of the main structural pieces. If you leave this until moving day, you will lose precious hours wrestling with rusty bolts while the moving clock is ticking.

2. Prep the BBQ and Empty the Fuel

Your BBQ is the centerpiece of summer, but it is also a massive hazard inside a moving truck if it isn't prepped correctly.

  • Give it a scrub: Clean the grills and empty the grease drip tray. If you don't, that grease will inevitably spill during transit and stain your other belongings.

  • Manage the fuel: For safety and insurance reasons, moving companies cannot transport highly flammable materials. You must disconnect your LPG gas cylinder and transport it safely in your own personal vehicle. Similarly, if you are moving a petrol lawnmower or weed eater, you need to drain the fuel tank completely before it goes on the truck.

3. Lighten the Load for Potted Plants

Aucklanders love a good container garden, but a large ceramic pot filled with wet soil can easily weigh over 50 kilograms!

To make your plants easier and safer to move, stop watering them three to four days before moving day. Dry soil is significantly lighter than wet soil. For larger bushes or small trees in pots, tie the branches gently together with some soft twine so they don't snap or take up unnecessary space inside the moving truck.

4. Bundle Your Garden Tools

Loose rakes, shovels, and brooms are awkward to carry and can easily scratch furniture if left rattling around the back of a truck.

Group your long-handled garden tools together and bind them tightly using heavy-duty tape or zip ties. Pack your smaller hand tools, gardening gloves, and hose attachments into a sturdy, clearly labeled moving box so you can get straight back to gardening at your new property.

5. Let the Professionals Handle the Heavy Lifting

Moving concrete statues, massive planter boxes, and heavy wooden outdoor suites is grueling work. If you try to DIY it, you risk pulling a muscle or damaging the items before you even leave the driveway.

This is exactly why you hire the professionals. Our experienced team at Super City Removals has the strength, the right heavy-duty trolleys, and the spatial awareness to safely load your bulky backyard items onto our trucks. We do the heavy lifting so you don't have to.
